Follow these easy steps to perfect your sabering skills for the ultimate experience of opening a bottle of bubbles. Watch Jean-Charles Boisset saber a bottle for even more inspiration.
Step 1: Start with a very cold bottle of bubbles and remove the foil capsule and the wire cage. Use caution when removing the cage as this releases pressure on the cork which on occasion, can cause the cork to pop unexpectedly.
Pro tip: Sabering works better when the entire bottle is cold. Try putting it in the freezer for 15-20 minutes before you’re ready to saber. The colder the bottle, especially the neck, the easier the glass will be to break.
Step 2: Grasp the bottle firmly by the base and point it away from yourself and others. Holding the bottle at a 30˚- 45˚ angle, place your saber or knife flat against the bottle with the blunt edge towards the lip. Firmly slide the knife up the neck of the bottle pushing through the cork.
Pro tip: Your knife doesn’t have to be sharp and once you have sabered a few bottles, you can use just about any knife or even a credit card to saber. Talk about a party trick!
