Chateau Buena Vista
Buena Vista Winery, founded in 1857, has a rich and unrivaled heritage as the first premium, and certainly the most colorful, of all of the wineries in California. Its founder, Agoston Haraszthy, the self-proclaimed “Count of Buena Vista,” was a vivacious and eccentric pioneer with a veritable love and unending commitment to California wine.
Just as we know today, the Count understood that great wine comes not only from great grapes, but also from great places. He chose the southernmost part of Sonoma Valley to build his winery due to the ideal location and ability to stretch his more than 6,000-acre estate into parts of Sonoma and Napa. Both regions offer a unique terroir, the magical combination of all the attributes required to create outstanding wines of a particular site, from the soil and the climate to the site’s exposure to the sun and the vine itself.
With the release of our Chateau Buena Vista wines, we are fortunate to uphold the legacy that was built by our illustrious founder, Count Agoston Haraszthy. These wines are a culmination of the storied history of Buena Vista… a story like no other. They honor the estate’s original foundation in the Napa and Sonoma valleys as well as the influence and prominence that Buena Vista Winery holds in establishing Napa and Sonoma as the preeminent wine regions of California.
The object of my travels is especially to note down everything in which the Europeans surpass us, and afterward lay them before the citizens of the United States.”
-Agoston Haraszthy

Chateau Buena Vista
In the 1860s, Buena Vista’s more than 6,000-acre estate stretched over the top of the Mayacamas Mountains into the Lovall Valley in Napa. The Count’s zeal to promote and develop the California region for wine was contagious and led to a boom of wine grapes grown in Napa and Sonoma.
Paying homage to Buena Vista’s indelible presence and significant contributions to the California wine world, Chateau Buena Vista Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon marks our return to Napa Valley and honors the estate’s original foundation in the valley.
“Cabernet is the unsurpassed grape; the wine made of it possesses splendid color and an exquisite bouquet.”
-Count Agoston Haraszthy, 1861

The debut of our Chateau Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir showcases the diversity of terroir in Sonoma. The grapes hail from the Sonoma Coast, where warm days are cooled by coastal fog, allowing the fruit to ripen over an extended time, resulting in rich, concentrated flavors. The fertile, valley floor soils and rocky, well-drained hillside vineyards make for an ideal location for world-class vineyards and Pinot Noir with red fruit flavors complemented by dark chocolate notes and balanced acidity.
Chateau Buena Vista
By 1861, the Count had planted well over 1,000 acres of vines in Sonoma Valley leading to an increase of winegrowing interest and forty-two vineyard owners within the area. Today, with our Chateau Buena Vista Carneros Chardonnay, we celebrate one of the world’s premier appellations for Chardonnay and the only appellation that is shared by both Napa and Sonoma counties. Due to its proximity to the San Pablo Bay, the Carneros AVA is the coolest and windiest appellation in Napa and Sonoma counties, creating wines with tropical fruit flavors and bright acidity.
